DIY Music Box Kit…the story

How cool to search for “Kikkerland” on YOUTUBE.com to find…among other cool homemade Kikkerland videos, a growing collection of folks who made and recorded their own tunes on the ‘Mechanical Music Box Kits’ offered by Kikkerland Design. We found this product with the urging of experimental musician Bob Marsh, who runs the shop at Zeum in San Francisco, a non-profit multimedia arts and technology museum with a mission to foster creativity and innovation in young people. Bob stills comes by our booth when Kikkerland is in SF to see what other products we might make that he can make music with…for example the battery operated milk-frother makes cool sounds on a drum symbol.
The ‘kit’ includes a special size hole puncher, instruction booklet, crank box, 3 blank music paper strips plus one pre-punched example with the tune, “Happy Birthday”. Paper refills are available, well, they will be come January.
“The tone of a musical box is unlike that of any musical instrument.” - Alec Templeton, an avid collector of music boxes and a professional concert musician.
The earliest known mechanical musical devices were invented in Bagdad by The Banu Musa brothers in the 9th century who also invented the valve, mechanical trick devices and the gas mask. Their revolving cylinder with raised pins is the same mechanism watchmakers in the 18th century used to make musical snuff boxes which has since evolved into the mechanical music box we have today.
Other famous moments in music box lore:
- Bjork in the album “Vespertine” and the song “Frosti”
- Colleen made an album using only music boxes “Colleen et les Boites a Musique.”
- In 1974-75, German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen composed Tierkreis, a set of twelve pieces on the signs of the zodiac, for twelve musical boxes.
- In Japanese anime and manga films, music boxes are used to convey romantic feelings.
- A music box that induces eternal sleep when played in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
- Panic! At the Disco’s cover “This is Halloween” in the Nightmare before Christmas uses a music box for the open and close of the song.
See you soon Bob!
Hey, it’s Zeum’s 10th year anniversary, check out www.zeum.org or better yet, pack up the kids and head for San Francisco. The shop is located on the corner of Fourth Street and Howard near the Moscone Center.

It’s a French Thing they do in France

TURBO STIRRERS!

French designer, Reno, designed the Turbo Stirrers for a popular French ‘children’s’ cocktail that comes with a less inspired stirring stick. His idea was to offer the more fun spinning-propellor design to the company but they turned it down. Not discouraged, Reno offered the design to Kikkerland Design who also produced Reno’s Battery Flashlight and more recently, Beautiful Earth Magnetic Globes.

When I asked Reno about it being a French item, he agreed “stirring a ’sirop de grenadine’ is very French. All childs [sic] do it. and…YES, ADD A FRENCH FLAG TO THE PACKAGING!”

When I asked Kikkerlander Perrine Giacomazzo, aka “Frenchie,” “No Ice?!” referring to the child’s picture above…she said. “That’s not French!”

The “very French” Turbo Stirrers come in assorted colors or black and white and great for entertaining. Reno’s products are available in New York City at Mxyplyzyk, in Miami at Arango, in Minneapolis at Patina Stores to name a few. For more information about Reno, check out the designer section of the Kikkerland website.

Design Peace for Veteran’s Day 2009

The Soldier Candle holder by Chris Collicott was created originally from Chris’s interest in changing the scale of small classic toys into larger functional art objects for adults. In 2006 as war was escalating in other parts of the world it became obvious to add a candle holder to a toy soldier as a symbol of peace.

Chris Collicott’s full biography and products made for Kikkerland Design can be found on the Kikkerland home page. This product and all of Chris Collicott’s designs can be purchased at Mxyplyzyk, a design shop in New York City’s West Village.

Election Night Cocktail Decision Maker

We asked our trusty stainless steel cocktail calculator, the BA149 Bar Compass, what drink would best go with tonight’s election results…I don’t know what it means but after a good spin it landed on a drink popular in the 1980’s, Sex on the Beach.

Sex on the Beach
- 1 ½ oz. Schnapps, peach
- 1 ½ oz. Vodka
- 2oz. Cranberry Juice
- 2oz. Orange Juice
- 2oz. Pineapple Juice
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a highball glass filled with ice.

This clever mechanical device retails all over the USA and Canada for around $10, including Into the Wind in Boulder, CO; Faces of Earth in Northhampton, MA; OOP in Providence, RI; Character in Soho NYC; Art Effect in Chicago; Rolo in Toronto, ON…to name a few.

Kikkerland: Home of the Unexpected

Written by Jeroen Kuiper when we were coming up with ways to describe Kikkerland Design for the website. We didn’t end up using it, but it’s a sweet story and a great reminder why we do this thing we do called Kikkerland Design.

Kikkerland, which translates as “land of frogs” is a term of endearment for the Netherlands. An improbable, small and water-logged country where winters are grey and rainy, but when Spring and Summer arrive frogs pop up everywhere making noise and jumping off in unexpected directions.

The Kikkerland Design collection works the same way: Out of the grey fog of more-of-the-same, appear all these unique items jumping every which way, announcing that happy times are here. What is consistent about Kikkerland is that you can expect the unexpected.

We provide a home for the original creations of our designers. Our unique designers find a playground at Kikkerland.
